Framed David Roberts Pyramids of Giza Print in Gilt Frame, Cairo, 10" x 8"

A small framed print reproducing David Roberts's view of the pyramids at Giza, with two great pyramids rising from the plain, a third beyond, and tiny figures gathered on the rocks in the foreground for scale. The palette is soft and dusty, pale sand and cool grey sky, with the artist's signature reproduced in the plate at lower right. Set behind a wide cream mat with a fine gilt fillet line and framed in a narrow gilded wood molding with a soft rubbed patina. Measures 10 by 8 inches including the frame, an easy scale for a gallery wall, a bookshelf lean, or a desk. The reverse carries a label from the Reader's Corner in Cairo, which means the piece was bought in Egypt and carried home rather than picked up domestically. Roberts traveled through Egypt and the Holy Land in 1838 and 1839, and the lithographs drawn from those studies became some of the most recognizable images of the region in the nineteenth century.
