12" Embossed Brass Sailing Ship Wall Plaque, Made in England

A round pressed brass wall plaque measuring 12 inches across, worked in deep relief and centered on an early sailing ship with a tall castellated stern and a single enormous square sail bellying out in the wind, seabirds overhead and stylized waves breaking beneath the hull. A twisted rope ring encircles the scene, and the broad outer band repeats acanthus and palmette scrollwork out to a gadrooned edge. The reverse carries an integral hanging tab stamped Made in England, the mark of the English pressed brass wall plates made through the mid twentieth century. Warm brass tone with deeper tarnish pooled in the low areas and a scatter of verdigris across the field, all of it earned honestly. Reads romantic and slightly medieval rather than strictly nautical, which makes it easy to place.
